Tipton Station - A Sandwell & West Midlands Gem!

Tipton Station is on the Birmingham New Street to Wolverhampton Line. It was first opened in 1852. The station was closed for redevelopment from 2009 to 2010.

In brief

The station was opened in 1852 serving the town of Tipton. It was known as Tipton Owen Street until 1968. A level crossing to the southern end of the station was removed between 2009 and 2010, this was while the platforms were extended. There is also a bus interchange. During the week there is typically two trains an hour on the line between Wolverhampton and Walsall via Birmingham New Street.

Tipton Station - details

A station under the name of Tipton Owen Street Station was opened at this site in 1852.

It was renamed to Tipton Station in 1968 when the line between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton was electrified.

There used to be a level crossing at the southern end of the station, but this was removed during the 2009 to 2010 refurbishment programme.

The 2010 improvements included new waiting areas, easier access to the station, a larger car park, a new subway, improved security and a new bus interchange.

Tipton is on the line between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street, with trains usually continuing onto Walsall.

The station does not have a footbridge, so interchange betwen platforms 1 and 2 is via a subway.

From Monday to Saturday, there is one train on the line every half an hour in both directions, on Sunday's usually one train an hour between Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street.

The station has a ticket office and ticket machine. There is a few benches to sit on in front of the station building, but the rest of the platforms are standing room only behind the yellow lines.
