The gatehouse to Heathfield Hall, Handsworth - history of the build
James Watt moved to Handsworth on the completion of Heathfield Hall in 1790. The lodge (or gatehouse) was built on what is now Radnor Road in 1797. Watt died in the hall in 1819. The contents were untouched for more than a century, before they were moved to the Science Museum in London in 1924. The hall itself was later demolished by 1927. The land was sold for the development of housing, around West Drive and North Drive, although the lodge of 1797 survived.
