In brief

Was a house called Piercefield at 11 Park Road owned by Henry William Carter. When he died in 1950 it was sold by his estate. It was sold in 1952 and became the New Synagogue. Due to a decline in the Jewish population in the 1990s, it was sold in 1997 to Friends of the World Buddhist Order (Midlands).

Birmingham Buddhist Centre - history

The property at 11 Park Road was owned by Henry William Carter, a former commercial traveller, when he died in August 1950, the house named "Piercefield" was sold by his estate.

In 1952 it was sold to the orthodox New Synagogue.

At the time there was a Jewish community living in the Moseley area.

Some rebuilding was done and the foundation stone was laid in October 1953 by P. Newman.

By the 1990s, the Jewish population in the area was declining, and in 1996 the New Synagogue merged with the Birmingham Hebrew Congregation (Singers Hill).

The intention was to vacate the building at 11 Park Road and build a new synagogue at the back of the King David School (what was the site of the school swimming pool).

The building was sold in 1997 [indirectly] to Friends of the World Buddhist Order (Midlands).

The Birmingham Buddhist Centre moved to their current premises in 1998.
