St Augustine's Church - history

An Anglican parish church located on an island around Lyttelton Road, between St Augustine's Road, Moorland Road and Melville Road.

The church stands at the centre of a the St Augustine's conservation area, and is one of the few churches dedicated to St Augustine of Hippo.

It's close to Edgbaston Reservoir, not far from the A456 Hagley Road and A4040 City Road.

Following a competition, the winning design from J. A. Chatwin was chosen, he suggested forming an island site a short distance from the Hagley Road.

The foundation stone was laid in October 1867 and the church was consecrated in September 1868.

The tower and spire was added in 1876 at 185 feet high and the tallest in Birmingham at the time.

There was other additions to the church, including the Lady Chapel in the late 1930s, the North transept in 1964 and a spacious narthex designed by P. B. Chatwin added in 1968.

After it's centenary, the church became a Grade II* listed building in 1970.

Also at the church is the Edgbaston War Memorial. For those lost in the First World War and Second World War.
