The Empty Streets of Birmingham on Christmas Day 2019

Being autistic has its advantages when it comes to having a special interest, mine is the city and photography. I went out at about midday into the city centre to see if I could get another set of 'empty city' photos like I did in 2011, and great medicine for my mental health it was! Kings Norton, Birmingham and 'Thomas The Tank Engine' - Did you know?

St Nicolas' Church in The Green at Kings Norton was home to Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son Christopher who were the authors of the original 'Thomas the Tank Engine' stories. It is a beautiful church with amazing grounds and is also the site of St Nicolas Place and the Old Grammar School, both 15th Century structures. Here a gallery of recent photos around the grounds.

Cannon Hill Park, the Memorial to the Sousse Terror Attack Victims - April 2019

In March the memorial to the 31 British victims of the 2015 Sousse Terror Attack in Tunisia was unveiled by Prince Harry in Cannon Hill Park, here's a small gallery of photos of this amazing sculpture called 'Infinate Wave' created by George King Architects.

Christmas Day 2011 - Alone in the City Centre

In 2011 I found myself alone for Christmas Day and whilst I was a bit down, I wasn't lonely. As an autistic person I have a base state of alone, so I took the opportunity to indulge my 'special interest' of city photography and to wander the streets of Birmingham city centre to get some shots. Serendipity intervened to gift this set of rare photos.

People inspired - introducing Daniel diagnosed with autism at age 30

Diagnosed with autism in his adult years at the age of 30, Daniel is one of many people who continue to find inspiration through abilities and talents that can be realised with the right outlet and given the right opportunity. In Daniel's case it's been photography and the opportunity to pursue this passion in Birmingham.     

Daniel Sturley is an inspired amateur photographer who lives in Birmingham

 

From the age of 7, Daniel has been fascinated by photography, and owned his first camera at 10.  He would take photos whilst on family holidays in Wales and he particularly enjoyed capturing the thrills at local rallycross meetings, and, of course taking photos of their cats!

Daniel moved to Birmingham in 1994 and quickly realised what the city offers a photographer, in particular its civic spaces, parks, variations of architecture, and, of course, the canals.

In 1998, at the age of 30, he was diagnosed with autism (Asperger’s syndrome) and started to understand more about why he had ‘special interests’ and photography of architecture and construction has grown as a particular specialism of Daniel's.

In May 2016, Daniel won ’The Cube Photographer of the Year’, and later that year helped bring together passionate and talented photographers across Birmingham to produce the first ever 'Birmingham Gems' calendar for charity.
