Where is Selly Oak Station?

Selly Oak Station is on Bristol Road, Selly Oak, Birmingham, B29 6DP

In brief

The then Midland Railway opened a station in 1876 on their Birmingham West Suburban Railway, serving the Birmingham suburbs of Selly Oak and Bournbrook, near the Bristol Road. The entrance to the station was on Heeley Road. Originally built with a single track, the track was doubled and the station rebuilt between 1883 and 1885, connecting the northern end to Birmingham New Street. The bridge over the Bristol Road was replaced in 1931. All of the stations original features were lost when it was rebuilt by British Rail and became part of the Cross City Line in 1978, the architect was John Broome, who designed other stations along the Cross City Line. The line through the station was electrified in the early 1990s. New lifts were installed on the footbridge in 2012. Now used by Class 323 Electric Multiple Units. Trains are every 10 minutes in both directions from Monday to Saturday, while on Sunday's there is a half hourly service.

New lifts on the footbridge

The station was made more accessable back in 2012 for passengers with wheelchairs or pushchairs etc, when new lifts were built onto the late 1970s footbridge. It gives passengers access from both the Park & Ride Car Park (Bristol Road entrance) and the Station Car Park (from Heeley Road).

Pyramid Sculpture

Cantoo was commissioned to develop new designs for the Selly Oak Park & Ride scheme in the mid 2000s. A pyramid sculpture was designed and built by Paula Woof and Eric Klein Velderman. The words around the base read: "Birmingham toys, all men praise, And riches spring daily from Birmingham toys. Not Europe can match us for traffic, America, Asi,and Afric, Of what we invent each partakes a share, For the best wrought of metals is Birmingham ware, Since by the canal navigation, Of coals weve the best in the Nation, Around the circle your bumpers then put, For the cut of all cuts is the Birmingham cut. Birmingham cut, fairly wrought. For the cut of all cuts is the Birmingham cut."
