In brief

A Church of England church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, located in Highgate. Built from 1879 to 1881 to the designs of John Loughborough Pearson. It took over the parish of St Patrick's Church, Bordesley, when St Patrick's was demolished in the early 1970s. It's been Grade II* listed since 1952. Due to it's poor condition, it's been on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register since 2018. The roof was renewed in 2020. Also known as the Church of St Alban the Martyr.

St Alban's Church - history

A large Early English style church built from 1879 to 1881 by J L Pearson.

Built of red brick with ashlar dressings.

The hump back roof was completed in 1938 by E F Reynolds.

There is good Birmingham Arts and Crafts work dating to 1919 by Kate and Myra Bunce.

It became a Grade II* listed building in April 1952.

St Alban's Church took over the parish of St Patrick's Church, Bordesley when it was demolished in the early 1970s.

The Birmingham Civic Society unveiled a blue plaque honouring the Bunce sisters in September 2015.

Since 2018, the church was on the Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register due to its poor condition.

The church is open to visitors during Birmingham Heritage Week each September, as part of Heritage Open Days.
