Coronation Gardens, Dudley - A wonderful open space!

Coronation Gardens is situated in Dudley Town Centre between Priory Road and The Broadway. It is the location of the Dudley War Memorial and the 1939 Apollo fountain statue by William Bloye.

In brief

You can find the Dudley Cenotaph or War Memorial here installed in 2002. As well as the Apollo fountain statue by William Bloye, 1939. Now part of the Dudley Learning Quarter. We can assume that the gardens was laid out in 1937 around the time of the Coronation of King George VI. It was originally called Priory Gardens.

Apollo fountain statue by William Bloye

A bronze statue on top of a fountain, dating to 1939 by the sculptor William Bloye. The model was international gymnast and basketball player Fred Starkey. The plaster models are in the collection of Birmingham Museums Trust.

Dudley War Memorial

The Dudley War Memorial, or Dudley Cenotaph is a granite obelisk in Coronation Gardens near Epsam Road. In memory of the men and women of Dudley lost in both World Wars and other conflicts. It is usually surrounded by poppy wreaths. Lest We Forget. It was installed in May 2002.

Dudley Learning Quarter

Coronation Gardens is now part of the Dudley Learning Quarter. It is next to Dudley College - Evolve and the Dudley Colllege of Technology. It was built on the site of Dudley Fire Station (the facade was retained on Tower Street).

Ben Corfield bench

A steel bench in loving memory of Ben Corfield (2003-22). He was Dudley's Youth Member of Parliament and the Chair of Dudley's Youth Council. He sadly died as a result of a road traffic collision in Oldbury in Sandwell, with a friend.

Workers Memorial Day 28th April

This is Dudley's memorial to those people who lost their lives while working. From the Dudley Trades Union Council.

Bert Bissell MBE

A memorial to Bert Bissell MBE (1902 - 1998). Who was a Freeman of the Borough of Dudley and was a Peacemaker.
