In brief

The Lodge is thought to date back to the early 18th century. It is a gateway of rusticated sandstone ashlar with slate roof. It was the lodge of the original Sandwell Hall which was demolished in 1928.

Major landmark at J1 of the M5

The M5 motorway opened in parts between 1962 and 1973. The Lodge of Sandwell Hall now remains as a major landmark at Junction 1 of the M5 at the West Bromwich Interchange.

The lodge can also be seen from a footbridge over the Birmingham Road, near The Hawthorns football stadium (home of West Bromwich Albion), with a number of other sports clubs nearby. The roundabout has a pavement and traffic lights, making it tricky to walk around. The no 74 bus between West Bromwich and Birmingham also goes past the lodge.
