In brief

The church dates to 1896, and architect was William Hale. Corner of School Road (towards Moseley) and Cambridge Road. It was an extension of a church built a few years earlier in 1887.

Cambridge Road Methodist Church - history

Methodism only came to Kings Heath by 1878, some 87 years after the death of John Wesley.

The first Wesleyan Methodist Church was built at the corner of School Road and Cambride Road in Kings Heath during 1887.

The Wesleyan Methodist community in Kings Heath started to meet in a private house on Avenue Road, the home of William Johnson and his wife.

After 1878, there was regular Sunday services in the Infants' Department of King's Heath Board School in Institute Road.

The Cambridge Road we know today was developed from these early meetings, with former names such as Kings Heath Wesleyan Church or Kings Heath Methodist Church, and from the mid 1940s as Cambridge Road Methodist Church.

The land was purchased in 1886, and building began by 1887, the first minister was appointed in 1888.

There was 46 members in 1887, then up to 76 by 1897.

There was plans to expand the church, and a new church began construction in 1896, this lasted until 1898. the architect was William Hale.

The Victorian benefactors had buried a time capsule that was discovered in 2016, it had laid untouched for 130 years!
